Challenges and Trends in Vehicle Logistics Management

A Growing Industry.

Vehicle logistics is a rapidly growing market that is faced with constantly increasing volumes of vehicles handled. During the last ten years, INFORM has conducted three studies on IT in vehicle logistics, and in each case, two-thirds of participants believed that volumes would increase by 10 to 20 % or even more than 20 % over the next five years. This has not changed in the current survey.

In the next five years, do you expect the volume of vehicles your company handles to grow?

Of course, this is also accompanied by the increasing complexity of logistics processes, as more different stakeholders, requirements, vehicle types, and intricately interlinked supply chains need to be taken into account. Accordingly, 38 % of those surveyed also believe they will continue struggling with capacity problems until 2025. A further 18%, summarized as "Other" below, expect this to happen even later than 2025 or never at all.

Capacity issues have happened during recent years. In your opinion, when will this be over?

Challenges Ahead and Comparison with Older Surveys

In the following, the participants were asked about a number of challenges that characterize the industry (see Chart 8). The need for greater efficiency in operational processes (71%), the ability to react flexibly to changes in plans (66%) and data transparency with regard to individual vehicles are top priorities, marked as "very important".

In addition to the preselection of possible trends shown in the Chart, the questionnaire also offered the opportunity to indicate other challenges of one's own. The participants named a large number of individual operational problems, but the ability to forecast demand was particularly prominent among them.

Essentially, the challenges do not appear to have changed much over the past five years, although the urgency of adhering to on-time delivery has actually decreased. The need to understand and reduce CO2 emissions is a completely new addition. A full 79 % of respondents rated these issues as "important" or "very important". Technology-wise, electric vehicles and artificial intelligence in particular will change vehicle logistics in the coming years (see Chart 9). They easily surpassed other innovations not covered in the previous study five years ago.

Which challenges in the vehicle management process are most important for you?

Respondents 2023: n = 106; 2018 = 61. Not all options were available in 2018.
