What AI has to do with fashion - and with INFORM!

A well-known Chuck Norris fact is: "Chuck Norris' sewing machine is not computer controlled, it does his bidding!" Unfortunately, Chuck Norris does not work in the fashion industry. And that is why, even with the best will in the world, production there is inconceivable without computers based on artificial intelligence.

AI is used in the production of jeans, shirts and pullovers, for example, to optimize the dyeing process. AI controls the dyeing process so that less water and chemicals are needed. Manufacturers also use AI in quality control to detect defective materials at an early stage. And when cutting fabrics, AI-based systems analyze patterns and cuts to minimize material consumption.

The optimal cutting of materials made possible by AI is based on a well-known mathematical problem - the cutting stock problem:

  • Whether it is textiles, pipes or wood, cutting raw materials should produce as little waste as possible. This is done by finding the optimal cutting plan that either minimizes waste or requires the least amount of raw material to be cut.
  • This problem is not limited to textile production. It also arises when loading cargo spaces, for example in a truck, a container or a cargo ship. Here, the aim is to use as little free space as possible.
  • Intelligent, AI-based algorithms calculate optimal solutions for all applications. In the textile industry, this leads to more efficient use of raw materials and less waste. And in freight logistics, it makes the best use of transport capacity, reducing CO2 emissions.

By the way, you are probably familiar with the cutting stock problem in your personal life. It becomes an acute issue when you are wrapping presents for your loved ones at Christmas. If you want to waste as little paper as possible, you have to solve the problem mathematically.

Or - if you don't want to do the maths - ask an AI! Or Chuck Norris! But Chuck Norris doesn't celebrate Christmas, Christmas celebrates Chuck Norris!
