This is how we realized that an idea once considered absurd was exactly right.
“If an idea is not absurd at first, then there is no hope for it,” Albert Einstein once said. When we began 57 years ago to look for new ways to optimize business processes, many people thought exactly that: absurd. Which made it exactly the right moment to pursue our idea, improving complex business processes using software and mathematical optimization.
Developing such systems was a pioneering achievement.
At the time, hardly anyone recognized the potential. We believed in it from the start and developed software systems that today ensure that in a container terminal a container is moved to the right place every three seconds, or that in plant engineering thousands of parts are available at the right time, in the right place, and in the right quantity. Our software analyzes large volumes of data in seconds, calculates numerous decision alternatives, and recommends the best possible solution for execution.
Long before the term artificial intelligence became widely used, we had already embedded mathematical optimization from operations research into operational software systems. This made one of the oldest AI methods broadly usable for business applications for the first time. Since then, we have demonstrated that companies make better decisions with our help. As a result, they operate with greater efficiency and reduce costs using these methods. Today, it would be absurd not to use our software.
However, being a pioneer does not mean that we embrace every new technology without question. Instead, we evaluate which new technologies actually help manage complex operations more effectively. From process mining to generative AI, we integrate what works and leave out what does not add value. Our goal, then and now, is to enhance human decision making with the help of AI.
To this day, we remain true to our pioneering spirit!
